Equality has improved much in the past century. However, there is still a long way to go. Change is happening, but slowly and progressively. About 70% of companies consider their company one that is supporting women's empowerment and working towards gender equality according to the UN's report.
While these are great to hear, if you look at other statistics, such as the 2020 Bloomberg report, only 6% of CEO positions are held by women. Companies need to start working towards a more equitable work environment between women and men. A way to start having more equality in the workplace is through empowering women! Empowered women and working professionals can lead the cause for equality. Empowered women are women who believe in themselves and have the ability to be leaders of their own lives and actions.

So here are some tips to empower yourself:
1) Become educated on news, economics, and financial skills. The best way to increase your confidence and awareness is through education. Learning should not end at graduation. Life-long learning is a sign of an empowered woman. If you are constantly immersing yourself in new ideas will enable you to be ready for any changes in your work environment.
2) You must learn how to network. Networking is one of the most powerful tools you have in your life to progress your career and overall life. You must establish relationships with other students, peers, mentors, and people in the field you are working towards. Even as a high schooler, you should begin your network system. You cannot be scared to reach out to people in the field you are interested in, whether that be a teacher, working professional, or alumni of your school! A great place to start in LinkedIn, and connecting with alumni of your school.
3) Be confident in who YOU are. Do not change yourself for anyone else. You should be authentic in who you are. Believing in yourself and owning who you are will help you progress in school and your career. Respect yourself.
4) Set goals, both long term and short term. Break your goals down, into smaller goals. You do not want to become overwhelmed, so setting smaller chunks of schools every month or week is great!
5) Do what scares you. You must take the leap, and go out of your comfort zone. This is the only way to feel empowered and reach your potential!
6) Take care of yourself. An empowered woman knows the way to feel empowered is by being healthy, hygiene, taking care of her body, self-care, and making sure her mental health is in a good place. This is why period poverty really does hurt women's empowerment and women feeling confident in themselves. We will talk about this in an article coming soon. Put your body and your health first.
